Galaxy Glass Butterflies — Flying Glass Swarm for VRChat

Glass butterflies with a spiral galaxy turning in every wing: they fly round your head with a real wing-beat, glide down to land on your shoulder, or spiral into your palm and melt into one glowing galaxy orb.

5 butterflies with clear glass wings, a galaxy spiralling out from the body across both wings, a polished silver outline and fine veins, a body of glass segments with a galaxy turning inside each, joined by silver rings (the chest glows on every down-stroke), a silver head and two antennae with a little star at each tip.

THEY FLY ON THEIR OWN (no menu, from the moment they appear)
• 2.4 wing beats a second, with a short glide on spread wings every 3.2 s
• Each butterfly has its own orbit round your head (20.8–31.2 cm out, at different heights), some clockwise and some the other way; one lap takes about 9 s
• They bob on the down-stroke, bank into the turn and leave a trail of star dust
• The galaxy in each wing turns once every 14 s
On PC it is all shader time: they keep flying while you stand still, with no extra parameters and no particle systems.

LAND (menu toggle)
1. The swarm glides down to your right shoulder
2. Each butterfly spreads its wings flat to brake and settles
3. Landed, they fold their wings up and slowly open and close them (one slow beat every 3.6 s)
Landing takes 2.6 s. Turn it off and they spread their wings and take off back into the orbit (1.6 s).

GATHER (menu toggle)
1. The butterflies spiral in towards your right palm
2. They fold their wings shut as they meet
3. They melt into a glass orb (10 cm) with a galaxy turning inside, floating over your hand
Gathering takes 2.8 s. Turn it off and the orb splits and the butterflies burst out and fly again (1.4 s).
A change of mind always plays the current move out first: nothing jumps.

THE MENU (Expressions menu "Galaxy Butterflies" · 9 items)
• Show: on / off. They open their wings and appear (1.2 s) or fold away (1 s)
• Land: on your shoulder, as above
• Gather: the orb in your hand, as above
• Colour: Milky Way Blue / Crimson Sky / Violet Void. On PC the new colour passes from butterfly to butterfly (1 s)
• Size: a radial, 0.5x to 1.6x
Show, Colour and Size are remembered. Land and Gather are not: after a rejoin the swarm starts flying.

• GB_GalaxyButterflies_Quest (Quest): the same menu, flight, landing, gathering, orb and colours on VRChat/Mobile/Particles/Additive with painted pictures and bones. Differences: the glass glows instead of reflecting, the outline is a light line, the orb is a soft glow, the colour changes at once instead of butterfly by butterfly, the chest does not pulse

GOOD TO KNOW
• Needs Modular Avatar (free, from the VRChat Creator Companion). No lilToon needed.
• Needs a humanoid avatar (the seats are on the Head, right upper arm and right hand bones).
• If they fly too close or too far on your avatar, change Size.
• The glow looks best in worlds with bloom.

The code that builds these butterflies (meshes, shaders, textures, Unity setup and animations) and the text on this page were written with help from an AI assistant. An AI image generator made rough concept sketches I looked at while designing; nothing it made is in the files or in the preview images, which are rendered in Unity from the actual prefab.
