Click Recolor is a Unity editor extension for lilToon materials. Click clothing, hair or accessories of an avatar in the Scene view to recolor that part. The window can switch between English and Japanese.
No avatar models are included (tool only).
Common problems it solves
- Finding which part of the UV texture is which piece of clothing, in an image editor, takes forever.
- A hue slider changes the whole outfit, or other parts that share the texture.
- Recoloring white or black clothes flattens the shading.
- You want the outfit color to match your hair or accessories exactly.
- You want to try it on your own avatar before buying.
What makes it different
- A free trial: recolor on your own avatar and check the preview before buying.
- The clicked part's average becomes the chosen color with the material Color applied (or the closest color the material can show).
- Shading differences are kept even for white, black and very bright colors.
- "Also include parts of a similar color" plus a Range slider: shaded sides and small parts come along. Auto-included parts are outlined in light blue; Shift + click removes extra ones, and they stay removed.
- Eyedropper: use the color of your hair or an accessory as the target.
- Full version: put the mesh into the window again later to get the color groups back and re-bake. "Put back the original materials" is included.
What it does
- Click in the Scene view to recolor that part (UV island). Click to add parts, Shift + click to remove them.
- Small parts such as an eye highlight can be clicked too.
- Several color groups within one mesh (a pink vest body with brown edges, and so on), with undo.
- While you work, only a preview is shown; the original materials, textures and meshes are not changed.
- Full version: "Save and use" makes a new PNG of the recolored main texture and material copies (new files), then swaps only the slots of that mesh. One Ctrl+Z undoes the swap (the created files stay).
- Does not change meshes or weights. The VRChat SDK and Modular Avatar are not required.
Free trial vs Full
- Free trial: pick parts, change colors and see the preview. No saving. Closing the window, entering Play mode or closing Unity removes the preview.
- Full: "Save and use" (goes into your upload) and "Put back the original materials".
- Importing the Full version over the Free trial replaces it.
Tested
- On 6 free avatars: clicking the chest and waist recolors the clothes, saving swaps the materials, and the original material and prefab files do not change.
- On 10 lilToon avatars, clicking the chest recolors it (one avatar that does not use lilToon stops with a reason).
- On a test plane, checked down to the pixel: shading differences stay, the clicked part's average becomes the chosen color, and neighboring parts' edges are not touched.
- Re-baking a saved mesh does not stack on the old colors.
- Saving makes new files instead of overwriting, and does not save your other unsaved files.
- The swapped materials stay after the same processing as an upload (Modular Avatar and similar builds).
Notes
- lilToon materials with a main texture only. lilToon Lite, Fur, Gem, outline-only, shadow-only and similar kinds, moving UVs (scroll / rotate, parallax, etc.), textures with sRGB off or Alpha Source set to Gray Scale, and textures of 8192 px or more are not supported (the window shows the reason).
- Only the main texture color changes. Main Color 2nd / 3rd, color adjustment, gradation maps and shadow color textures can make those areas look different (the window tells you).
- Parts are split by UV islands; you cannot recolor only part of one island on its own.
- Parts that share the same texture area (left/right sharing, etc.) change together (the window shows how many).
- One mesh at a time; recolor and save separate meshes (for example a vest and a skirt that are different meshes) one by one. The Free trial preview is also one mesh at a time.
- Colors that the material Color cannot show use the closest one (the window tells you).
- PC only (lilToon is not available on standalone Quest). Meshes need Read/Write. Prefab Mode is not supported.
Requirements
- Unity 2022.3 (tested on 2022.3.22f1), lilToon (tested on 2.3.4), a Linear color space project.
How to install
- Drag ClickRecolor*.unitypackage into the Unity Project window and press Import.
- Menu: Tools > Click Recolor. The window has an "English" checkbox at the top.
Terms
- Personal and commercial use are both OK. When you distribute or sell textures recolored with this tool, follow the terms of the original texture (avatar or outfit). Do not redistribute or resell the tool itself.
